Abstract

Herbal medicine plays a vital role in global healthcare by providing affordable, accessible, and culturally accepted treatments while serving as a major source of modern pharmaceuticals.  Drug discovery continues to benefit greatly from natural products derived from plants, microorganisms, marine organisms, and minerals. However, conventional drug discovery is often time-consuming and expensive.  Digital Herbal Intelligence (DHI) integrates Artificial Intelligence (AI), natural product databases, computer vision, and big data analytics to accelerate herbal drug discovery. Natural Product Databases (NPDBs) are structured digital repositories containing information on chemical structures, biological sources, phytochemicals, and pharmacological activities.  Databases such as IMPPAT, NPASS, COCONUT, and the Natural Products Atlas enable researchers to identify bioactive compounds, perform dereplication, and explore therapeutic applications efficiently.  AI-driven tools support plant identification, quality control, phytochemical analysis, and predictive drug discovery while promoting data-driven decision-making. Green drug discovery combines biodiversity, green chemistry, and AI to develop eco-friendly medicines with reduced hazardous waste and energy consumption.  These approaches have promising applications in anticancer drug discovery through the identification of bioactive natural compounds with improved efficacy and reduced toxicity.  AI presents opportunities for improved bioactive compound extraction, smart cultivation, and precision herbal medicine despite obstacles like phytochemical variability, the absence of standardized reference markers, and batch-to-batch inconsistency. Digital Herbal Intelligence is transforming herbal drug discovery into a faster, greener, and more sustainable process for future healthcare.
