Abstract

Computer-Aided Drug Design (CADD) is an innovative and cost-effective approach that uses computational tools to accelerate the discovery and development of new drug molecules. It plays a vital role in modern pharmaceutical research by reducing the time, cost, and resources required for traditional drug development. CADD integrates bioinformatics, molecular modelling, molecular docking, virtual screening, and pharmacokinetic prediction to identify promising drug candidates with improved efficacy and safety. One of the most important techniques in CADD is molecular docking, which predicts the interaction between a drug molecule (ligand) and its biological target (protein). This helps researchers understand binding affinity, optimize lead compounds, and select potential candidates before laboratory testing. Additionally, tools such as Quantitative Structure–Activity Relationship (QSAR), pharmacophore modeling, and ADMET prediction assist in evaluating biological activity, toxicity, absorption, metabolism, and excretion of drug candidates. CADD supports sustainable and eco-friendly drug development by minimizing the need for excessive chemical synthesis, reducing laboratory waste, and decreasing the use of experimental animals. It also enables rapid screening of thousands of compounds, making the drug discovery process more efficient and environmentally responsible. Applications of CADD include the discovery of drugs for cancer, infectious diseases, cardiovascular disorders, diabetes, and neurodegenerative diseases. With advancements in artificial intelligence, machine learning, and high-performance computing, CADD has become an indispensable tool in pharmaceutical research. Overall, Computer-Aided Drug Design represents a greener, faster, and more reliable strategy for developing safe and effective medicines, contributing significantly to the future of precision medicine and sustainable healthcare.
