The pharmaceutical industry faces significant challenges in drug discovery and development, including high costs, lengthy timelines, and low success rates. Traditional approaches often require over a decade and substantial financial investment to bring a new drug to market. Recent advances in Artificial Intelligence (AI) have emerged as transformative tools capable of accelerating pharmaceutical research by integrating computational power with biological and chemical data. AI technologies are increasingly being utilized to identify disease mechanisms, predict therapeutic targets, and optimize drug candidates with greater efficiency and precision. This study aims to explore the impact of AI on pharmaceutical chemistry and evaluate its role in enhancing disease understanding, target identification, lead optimization, drug repurposing, and precision medicine. This study presents a comprehensive review of contemporary AI-based approaches employed in pharmaceutical chemistry. Computational methodologies such as machine learning algorithms, deep neural networks, molecular docking, virtual screening, and cheminformatics tools were evaluated for their effectiveness in target discovery, lead generation, pharmacokinetic prediction, and therapeutic optimization. Recent advancements integrating AI with genomics, proteomics, and clinical data were examined to assess their impact on accelerating drug development and improving decision-making throughout the pharmaceutical research process. AI-based approaches have significantly improved the speed and accuracy of drug discovery processes. Machine learning algorithms facilitate the identification of novel therapeutic targets and prediction of drug–target interactions, while deep learning models enhance virtual screening and lead optimization. Furthermore, AI-driven drug repurposing has accelerated the discovery of treatments for emerging diseases. Integration of AI with genomics, proteomics, and clinical datasets has enabled personalized therapeutic strategies, contributing to the advancement of precision medicine. These innovations have demonstrated potential to reduce research costs, minimize attrition rates, and improve clinical success. Artificial Intelligence is revolutionizing pharmaceutical chemistry by transforming how diseases are decoded and therapies are designed. The convergence of AI, medicinal chemistry, and biomedical sciences offers unprecedented opportunities to accelerate drug development and improve patient outcomes. Continued interdisciplinary collaboration and responsible implementation of AI technologies will be essential for shaping the future of innovative and precision-based healthcare.
