Abstract

Chronic wounds, including diabetic foot ulcers, venous leg ulcers, and pressure ulcers, are frequently associated with unpleasant odor caused by bacterial metabolism and tissue degradation. This malodor causes discomfort, social embarrassment, reduced self-confidence, and poor quality of life. Although advanced odor-control dressings are available, their high cost and limited accessibility restrict their use in resource-limited settings. This study proposes the development of a moisture-activated odor-neutralizing secondary dressing using Aloe vera hydrogel combined with natural aromatic plant extracts. Fresh Aloe vera gel is extracted, blended, and filtered to obtain a smooth gel, while lemongrass (Cymbopogon citratus) and tulsi (Ocimum sanctum) extracts are prepared using hot distilled water. The formulation is coated onto sterile cotton gauze and dried under controlled conditions to produce a dry secondary dressing. During storage, the dressing remains stable and dry. Upon contact with wound exudate, Aloe vera absorbs moisture and forms a soft hydrogel that maintains a moist wound environment. Simultaneously, aromatic compounds released from lemongrass and tulsi help neutralize and mask unpleasant wound odor, improving patient comfort and confidence. The dressing is intended to complement routine wound management rather than replace primary wound care or antimicrobial therapy. It is expected to provide moisture absorption, hydrogel formation, odor-neutralizing ability, flexibility, and comfort using biodegradable, plant-based materials. Further laboratory studies are required to evaluate its physicochemical properties, biocompatibility, odor-neutralizing efficiency, and overall performance before clinical application.
