Abstract

Artificial Intelligence (AI) has emerged as a transformative technology in pharmaceutical research, significantly improving the efficiency and accuracy of drug discovery and development. Conventional drug discovery is a complex, costly, and time-intensive process that often requires over a decade to bring a new medicine to market. AI techniques, including machine learning, deep learning, natural language processing, and predictive analytics, enable researchers to analyse vast biological and chemical datasets, identify promising drug targets, predict molecular interactions, optimise lead compounds, and estimate drug safety with remarkable speed and precision. AI also enhances virtual screening, drug repurposing, biomarker identification, and clinical trial design, reducing failure rates and accelerating the development of effective therapies. Furthermore, the integration of AI with genomics and precision medicine supports personalised treatment strategies, improving patient outcomes and advancing healthcare delivery. In addition, AI-driven pharmacovigilance systems facilitate the early detection of adverse drug reactions and strengthen medication safety throughout the drug life cycle. Despite these advantages, challenges such as data privacy, ethical considerations, algorithm transparency, regulatory compliance, and the need for high-quality datasets remain significant barriers to widespread implementation. Addressing these issues through multidisciplinary collaboration and responsible AI governance is essential. Overall, Artificial Intelligence is reshaping the future of pharmacy by making drug discovery faster, more accurate, and cost-effective. As AI technologies continue to evolve, they will play an increasingly important role in developing innovative medicines, supporting evidence-based healthcare, and improving global public health.
