Herbal and traditional medicines have served as the foundation of healthcare for thousands of years and continue to play an indispensable role in improving human health across the globe. Traditional medicinal systems such as Ayurveda, Siddha, Unani, Homeopathy, and Traditional Chinese Medicine have contributed significantly to disease prevention, treatment, and health promotion. In recent decades, there has been a growing interest in integrating these ancient practices with modern scientific approaches to develop safe, effective, and affordable therapeutic alternatives. Advances in pharmaceutical sciences, biotechnology, and analytical techniques have transformed the field of herbal medicine. Sophisticated methods such as chromatography, spectroscopy, and molecular biology have enabled researchers to identify, isolate, and characterize bioactive compounds from medicinal plants with greater accuracy. These advancements have facilitated the standardization of herbal products, ensuring consistency in quality, potency, and safety. Furthermore, nanotechnology-based drug delivery systems and novel formulation strategies have improved the bioavailability and therapeutic efficacy of herbal medicines. Herbal medicines are increasingly being investigated for their potential in managing chronic and lifestyle-related disorders, including diabetes, hypertension, cancer, neurodegenerative diseases, and cardiovascular ailments. Several plant-derived compounds have demonstrated remarkable pharmacological activities, leading to the development of new drug candidates. In addition, the global emphasis on natural and sustainable healthcare has increased consumer acceptance and market demand for herbal products. Despite these developments, challenges remain in the areas of quality control, standardization, regulatory approval, and clinical validation. Variations in plant sources, cultivation practices, and extraction methods can affect the therapeutic outcomes of herbal formulations. Therefore, comprehensive clinical trials and international regulatory harmonization are essential to establish the scientific credibility of traditional medicines. The future of herbal and traditional medicine lies in fostering collaboration between researchers, healthcare professionals, and policymakers. By combining traditional knowledge with evidence-based scientific research, herbal medicines can contribute significantly to global healthcare and support the development of innovative, sustainable, and patient-centred therapeutic solutions.
